Taxila - meaning "city of cut stone" - is located near Rawalpindi in Pakistan, in a region that was part of the ancient Indian subcontinent. Its origin dates back to 10 BC. At the junction of three great trade routes, Taxila held an important position during each of the successive kingdoms.
Around 6 BC, it became famous as a centre of advanced learning and attracted students from all over. In fact,it is said to be one of the world's earliest universities. There were a number of reputed teachers, each with a school of his own. Unfortunately, it was all destroyed by the nomadic Huns in 5 AD.
