Nek Chand's Secret Garden

One day in the year 1957 Nek Chand found some unusual rocks from old buildings that has been destroyed in the city. He collected and took them to a forest by the Sukhan Lake Here decided to clear a small patch to make a decorative garden.
Nek chand had always been fond of building beautiful things from objects that had been thrown away. As a little boy he had built forts and castles from things that had been discarded. He had also created figures of people and animals from clay.
Every evening, after work Nek chand would get onto his bicycle and cycle all over the city.
He would look for discarded material that he could use in his garden. He collected old tyres, fused tube lights and bulbs, pieces of broken bangles and glass, part of old cars, machinery and even rags. Then he would go to his secret garden and work till late. Though it was hard work and mosquitoes bit him, Nek chand made colourful and imaginative human and animal figures from all the waste material he had collected. He even spent all his holidays there.
Today, rock garden made by Nek Chand is spread over 30 acres of land. People who visit it can see thousands of sculptures arranged in courtyards. This amazing garden of recycled material is considered one of the wonders of the modern world.
